Business Intelligence Competency Centre

Information Governance is key for unlocking the information asset

The Competency Centre (CC) defines the Business Intelligence (BI) vision for the organisation: setting stan- dards, specifying the technology, prioritising projects and developing user skills. The Business Intelligence Competency Centre (BICC) is a working team of IT and BI users. It brings together people from interrelated disciplines, combining their knowledge, experiences and skills, in order to manage and support implementations across the organisa- tion. The skill set of the BICC spans Business, Analytics and IT/Technical.

Why have a BICC

A BICC provides a central location for driving and supporting the organisation’s overall business intelligence strategy. It enables the organisation to coordinate and complement existing efforts, while reducing redundancy and increasing effectiveness. The centralisation of these efforts ensures that information and best practices are communicated and shared through- out the organisation enabling everyone to benefit from the successes and lessons learned. The BICC can enable knowledge transfer and enhance ana- lytic skills by centralising resources, as well as coaching and training end users.

Level of Governance

The BICC will have full authority to exert governance over all BI projects but will apply a varying degree of interven- tion corresponding to the use and interdependencies of the BI solution under consideration. The more stand-alone the use of the BI solution, the less governance by the BICC is required. However, as the use becomes wider the BI solu- tions will quickly come under the BICC’s governance.

Funding of the BICC

The funding of the BICC will be determined during the initial phase of setting up the BICC. The extent and type of funding will vary from organisation to organisation. For ex- ample, the funding could be limited to the day-to-day run- ning of the BICC and any projects which are involved in the internal workings of the BICC. All other individual projects will be responsible for their own funding.
